What a DPF does
A diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps soot from the exhaust. Every so often the engine burns that soot off, a process called regeneration, which needs a sustained run at speed to get hot enough. Lots of short journeys, faulty sensors or other engine problems stop that happening, and the filter starts to block.
How we approach it
The first step is diagnosis: reading fault codes and live data such as soot load and differential pressure, and checking the sensors, EGR system and injectors that commonly cause blocking. Depending on what’s found, the filter can often be cleared with a forced regeneration carried out with diagnostic equipment, followed by fixing whatever caused the problem in the first place.
Where a filter is too far gone, or the fault needs a workshop repair, you’ll be told straight away.
What we won’t do
Removing a DPF, or disabling it in software, is illegal on road vehicles in the UK and is an MOT failure. It isn’t part of this service. The aim is a DPF that works properly.
Questions about DPF solutions
Why does my DPF keep blocking?
The most common cause is driving that never gets the exhaust hot enough to regenerate, such as lots of short trips. Faulty pressure sensors, EGR problems and injector issues are also common, which is why diagnosis comes first.
Can you remove my DPF?
No. DPF removal is illegal on road vehicles in the UK and will fail an MOT. We diagnose and resolve DPF problems so the filter works as it should.
