Frequently asked questions
Balanced answers to the questions people ask most before booking a remap.
What is ECU remapping?
Your engine control unit (ECU) runs software that decides fuelling, ignition timing, turbo boost and more. Manufacturers write one calibration to suit a model sold in many markets. ECU remapping adjusts that calibration to suit your vehicle and how you use it, typically for better torque, response or efficiency. More about ECU remapping.
Is Stage 1 remapping suitable for my vehicle?
Stage 1 is a software-only remap for vehicles with standard hardware, and it suits most turbocharged petrol and diesel cars and vans in good condition. It's less worthwhile on engines with little factory headroom, and vehicles with faults, warning lights or a worn clutch should be put right first. Send your registration and you'll get a straight answer. More about Stage 1.
How long does remapping take?
Many remaps take an hour or two, but it varies by vehicle — some ECUs need to be removed and read on the bench, which takes longer. You'll be given an idea of timing when you get your quote.
Can remapping improve fuel economy?
It can on some vehicles, particularly diesels covering steady miles, because extra low-down torque lets the engine work less hard. But economy depends heavily on how you drive: use the extra torque to accelerate harder and consumption may rise. Nobody can honestly promise a fixed saving. More about economy remapping.
Will remapping affect my warranty?
It may. A manufacturer can decline a warranty claim on parts it believes were affected by a modification. If your vehicle is still under manufacturer or extended warranty, check the terms before booking. If it's leased or on finance, check your agreement too.
Do I need to inform my insurer?
Yes. A remap is a modification and should be declared to your insurer. Failing to declare it could give them grounds to reduce or refuse a claim. Some insurers will adjust your premium; others won't.
Can a remap be reversed?
Your vehicle's original software is read and saved before anything is changed, so it can normally be written back later.
Will a remap affect my MOT?
A remap that leaves emissions equipment in place and working shouldn't cause an MOT failure on its own. Removing or disabling a DPF, EGR or AdBlue system is illegal on road vehicles and is not part of any service offered here.
Do you come to me?
Yes. JF Remapping is a fully mobile service, so your vehicle is remapped at your home or workplace. All that’s needed is somewhere it can be parked safely while the work is done. See the areas covered.
